Quick comments on revised distribution and timeline of some L0 mitochondrial lineages (Chan 2015)

Within mitochondrial haplogroup L0 :Chan 2015 img1

  • Subhaplogroup L0d diverged ~172 ka (95 % CI: 199-149 ka)
    • L0d1 & L0d2 diverged ~93 ka (112-76 ka)
      • L0d1b diverged ~49 ka (57-38 ka) and is widely distributed in Southern Africa.
      • L0d2a, diverged ~17 ka (27-10 ka), too.
      • L0d1c is currently restricted to contemporary inland Khoesans.
    • Subhaplogroup L0k was the second to diverge, ~159 ka (183-136 ka).Chan 2015 img2
      • The lineage L0k1 is also currently restricted to contemporary inland Khoesans.
    • A new lineage, named in the paper L0g, diverged ~94 ka (116-72 ka).

“The observed predominance of L0d2a and L0d1a in non-Khoesan populations suggests a once independent coastal Khoesan prehistory.”

“The distribution of early-diverged human maternal lineages within contemporary southern Africans suggests a rich history of human existence prior to any archaeological evidence of migration into the region.”
